Bhutan Group Tour from India: Costs, Packages, and What to Expect
There is something about Bhutan that gets better with company.
Not because the country is complicated – it isn’t. But because the drives are long and beautiful, the meals are communal, and the moment someone in your group first sees Punakha Dzong from across the river, you want people around you to share it with.
A Bhutan group tour from India is also, simply, the smartest way to do this trip. Costs split. Experiences multiply.
Here is everything you need to know before you book.
What Counts as a Group Tour to Bhutan?
In practical terms, a group tour is any Bhutan trip with four or more travelers booking together – whether that’s a family, a group of friends, a corporate team, or a college batch.
The reason four matters: most vehicles used for Bhutan travel are Innova Crystas and similar 7-seater SUVs. A group of four fills one car. Costs split four ways. The per-person price starts making a lot of sense.
Six to eight people? Two cars. But now the hotel, guide, and operator costs also divide further. A Bhutan group tour of six or eight is often the best per-person value you can find in South Asian travel.
How Much Does a Bhutan Group Tour Cost from India?
This is the question everyone asks first. Here is an honest, practical answer.
SDF: The Fixed Cost Nobody Can Change
Every tourist in Bhutan pays the Sustainable Development Fee – ₹1,200 per person per night for Indian nationals. It is mandatory, set by the Royal Government of Bhutan, and cannot be reduced by group size, package type, or operator.
For a 5-night group trip, that is ₹6,000 per person in SDF alone. For a group of 6 people, that is ₹36,000 total just in SDF – before a single hotel night or meal.
Build this into your budget first. Everything else is negotiable to some degree.
Costs That Do Come Down with Group Size
Expense | Solo / Couple | Group of 4 | Group of 6–8 |
SDF (5 nights) | ₹6,000 pp | ₹6,000 pp | ₹6,000 pp |
Vehicle (Innova, 5 nights) | ₹10,000-₹14,000 pp | ₹3,500-₹5,000 pp | ₹2,500–₹4,000 pp |
Budget accommodation (per night) | ₹2,000-₹3,000 pp | ₹1,500-₹2,500 pp | ₹1,200–₹2,000 pp |
Licensed guide (5 nights) | ₹4,000-₹6,000 pp | ₹1,500-₹2,000 pp | ₹1,000–₹1,500 pp |
Total estimate per person | ₹30,000–₹42,000 | ₹18,000–₹26,000 | ₹16,000–₹22,000 |
Please note: All costs above are approximate and for planning purposes only.
Actual pricing depends on group size, hotel category, travel season, and package inclusions. SDF is fixed at ₹1,200 per person per night and applies to all travelers. Final package pricing will be confirmed at the time of booking. Contact Sunshine Travels for an accurate quote tailored to your group.
The savings on a group of six compared to a solo traveler can be anywhere from ₹10,000 to ₹18,000 per person – for the exact same trip.
What a Standard Bhutan Group Tour Package Covers
A complete Bhutan tour package for groups from India typically includes:
- Bhutan Entry Permit – processed at Phuentsholing immigration
- Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) – paid upfront, included in package total
- Licensed Bhutanese Guide – mandatory for all travel beyond Phuentsholing
- Private vehicle – dedicated Innova or similar SUV for the group
- Accommodation – hotels in Thimphu, Punakha, and Paro (based on category chosen)
- Meals – usually breakfast and dinner; lunch at local restaurants en route
- Inner Line Permits – for travel through checkpoints across Bhutan
What is typically not included in standard packages: Tiger’s Nest entry (₹1,000 per person), personal shopping, alcohol, and tips for the driver and guide.
Always ask your tour operator in Bhutan or Jaigaon-based agent for a full, itemised breakdown before you confirm.
The Standard 5 Night / 6 Day Bhutan Group Itinerary
Most Bhutan group tours from India follow this route:
Day | Destination | Highlights |
Day 1 | Jaigaon → Phuentsholing → Thimphu | Border crossing, permit collection, scenic mountain drive |
Day 2 | Thimphu | Buddha Dordenma, Tashichho Dzong, National Memorial Chorten |
Day 3 | Thimphu → Dochula Pass → Punakha | 108 chortens at 3,100m, Punakha Dzong, Chimi Lhakhang |
Day 4 | Punakha → Paro | Rinpung Dzong, National Museum, Paro town walk |
Day 5 | Paro | Tiger’s Nest hike (950m elevation gain), Drukgyel Dzong |
Day 6 | Paro → Phuentsholing → Jaigaon | Return journey, exit formalities |
This covers the three main valleys of Bhutan – Thimphu, Punakha, and Paro – and ends with the hike that every group remembers longest. It is not rushed. It gives each place its proper time.
Want to extend? A 7-night Bhutan travel guide would add Haa Valley on Day 4 or include Phobjikha Valley for crane season (October–February). Your operator can adjust.
Car Rental in Bhutan: How It Works for Groups
Car rental in Bhutan is not optional – it is built into every licensed tour.
All vehicles used for tourist travel inside Bhutan are registered and approved.
Operators arrange dedicated vehicles for the full duration of the trip, with a driver who knows the roads and the checkpoints.
For a group of 4 to 6 people, one Innova Crysta covers everything comfortably – bags, passengers, and the steep mountain climbs between valleys. Groups of 7 or more typically need two vehicles.
A Jaigaon-based operator handles car rental in Bhutan as part of the package. You do not arrange this separately, and you should not need to.
Best Time for a Bhutan Group Tour from India
Season | Months | What Your Group Gets |
Spring | March – May | Rhododendrons, Paro Tshechu festival, clear skies |
Autumn | September – November | Best mountain views, Thimphu Tshechu, perfect trekking weather |
Winter | December – February | Empty trails, Punakha Tshechu, lower prices |
Monsoon | June – August | Lush valleys, lowest costs, some road delays |
For most groups – especially first-timers – October or April give the most reliable combination of weather, views, and at least one major festival nearby.
For large groups booking in peak season, advance planning is essential. Licensed vehicles and guides book out weeks ahead during Paro Tshechu and Thimphu Tshechu.
Things That Surprise Group Travelers (But Shouldn't)
You cannot travel independently beyond Phuentsholing. Every group, regardless of size, must have a licensed guide and valid permits. A good travel agency in Bhutan handles this entirely – it is not complicated when your operator knows what they are doing.
SDF does not reduce for groups. Some travelers assume larger groups get a discount on the Sustainable Development Fee. They do not. ₹1,200 per person per night applies regardless of how many people are in your group.
₹2,000 notes are not accepted in Bhutan. Carry ₹500 and ₹100 notes. ATMs are available in Thimphu, but limited in smaller towns.
The Tiger’s Nest hike is doable for most groups. Horses are available at the trailhead for the lower section. The trail is well-marked. A group moving at a comfortable pace with an early start (7:00 AM) will have no trouble.
Dochula Pass can be cloudy. If the weather turns during your drive from Thimphu to Punakha, the 108 chortens are still worth stopping for. The mountain views are a bonus – not the feature. Plan for both possibilities.
